How to create a vision board

Last week I wrote about why it’s ok to dream big and aim high. In that post I mentioned creating a vision board.

This is something I first did a couple of years ago, and I know it’s something that a lot of business owners do. If you haven’t yet created your own vision board, here’s the skinny on how and why you should.

How To Create A Vision Board

What is a vision board?

Ok, first things first, what the flip is a vision board? If you’ve ever read anything about Law of Attraction, manifesting or visualisation, then you’ll be familiar with the idea that we can manifest what we put out to the universe. Ok, a little bit woo woo, but stick with me…

You can use a vision board to note down all the things you hope to achieve, and tell it to the universe (and to yourself). It’s a well known fact that people who write down their goals are far more likely to achieve them. With a vision board you’re allowing yourself to literally visualise your dreams and desires.

I have mine on the wall in my office and I look at it every day to remind myself what I’m aiming for. If nothing else, I get some quality time staring at pretty pictures of champagne, fresh flowers, hotels, spas and exotic destinations…

But seriously, I’ve found that if you surround yourself with reminders about what you want, and constantly focus on what you want, the universe often has a way of giving you exactly that.

How to make your vision board

I have two versions of mine – an online version, which is a secret board on Pinterest (speaking of which, come and join me on Pinterest and see my other boards), and a real-life pin board version, which is on the wall in my office.

Digital version:

  • Create a new board on Pinterest – it can be a public board, or you may prefer to keep it secret
  • Take a moment to brainstorm the kinds of things you want to achieve in your life and/or business
  • Use something like Evernote or Coggle to make a list/mind-map of your goals for areas like health, family, relationships, wealth, travel, career, business, etc
  • Search Pinterest or the internet to find images for the things you want to add to your board
  • Pick out whichever images really resonate with you, and re-pin them to your board
  • Also search for inspirational quotes or mantras to include on your board (I have a board dedicated to inspiring quotations here)
  • Pick your favourite image to set as the board cover
  • Make sure you log in and look at it regularly, ideally every day, and update it as and when your goals change

Real life version:

  • Use a traditional cork pin-board or poster board
  • Grab a selection of magazines, newspapers, leaflets – anything with images and words that you can utilise
  • OR alternatively, you can follow the steps above for the digital version, and print off images from the internet using a colour printer
  • Brainstorm what you want to achieve in your life and/or business
  • Scribble down a list/mind-map of your goals for areas like health, family, relationships, wealth, travel, career, business, etc
  • Search through the magazines to find images that align with your goals and resonate with you
  • Time to go a bit Blue Peter (or a bit Martha Stewart if you’re American). Basically, time to get your craft on. Tear or cut out the images you’ve picked. You can also cut out text – especially headlines – to use as inspiring words, quotes or mantras
  • Arrange them on your board and attach with pins, sticky tape or glue
  • Fix your board somewhere you’ll see it every day
  • Make sure to look at it often – spend a few minutes every day focusing on each image so that it enters your sub-conscious

Ta-dah, you’ve created a vision board!
